Proper Feeding
Puppy Feeding
People aren’t always sure how and when to feed their puppy. Below is a general rule of thumb:
- 0-6 months feed 3 times a day
- 6 months on feed twice a day
When feeding your puppy it’s very important that they have enough nutrients to power through the day. Look at the diagram on the back of the dog food bag for their size and their age. Always error on the higher end of the chart. For example; if it says your puppy needs somewhere between 2 and 4 cups make sure that he is getting 4 cups even if his weight is at the lower end of the weight requirements. We never want the dog to be hungry. It is important that they have enough nutrients when they’re growing.
Adult Feeding
- Feed adult dogs twice a day and pay attention to activity level and age. Check the back of the dog food bag and go by the requirements for your dogs age and weight.
Signs that your dog is too thin
- If you can see the dog’s ribs and feel the indentations of the ribs, your dog is too thin. If you can not feel the ribs at all your dog is overweight. Ideally you want to be able to feel the ribs but not see them.
